Here is the "Sweet 16" cake for my daughter last weekend. Can you believe there are 28 eggs in that puppy! The diamonds are from black fondant and all other frosting is a great butter cream recipe....great tasting frosting was an important element to me, thus the very small usage of fondant, I'm not a fan of the flavor. This was my first tiered cake endeavor and I must admit I put quite a bit of research in before even starting (thank God for Evernote & my IPAD). All in all, I think the end result was great and I would tell anyone if you are willing to do a bit of research and learn from others ............. don't be afraid to tackle this. The payoff for my daughter was so worth it. Yes, the cake feeds a ton of folks so if you are having a large party this would do beautifully.
Cake details:
- 3 Tiers (14", 10", 6") The 14" tier was a 3" deep vanilla bean cake. I used the Wilton 3-tier set and was so pleased. The 10" tier contained 2-3" layers for a total of 6"; this one was chocolate on one layer and a wonderful orange cream on the second. Finally the 6" tier was all chocolate and turned out so dense and yummy. In the end my favorite was the chocolate & orange layer.
- Decorated with butter cream frosting, fondant(for the black diamonds), bubble gum Mardi Gras coins, a mirrored sweet 16 pick, and Mardi Gras masks & hand streamers.
